PLEASE CIRCULATE TO FINAL YEAR AND MA STUDENTS:
ESRC 1+3 CASE PhD Studentship: Understanding the relationship between
resilience and health in the North East of England
Applications are invited for this exciting and prestigious studentship
which will cover costs of fees and maintenance for a four year programme
(1+3) of postgraduate study at Durham’s world leading (RAE 5**) Department
of Geography and will involve collaboration with the NHS North East Public
Health Observatory (NEPHO). This will be of interest to suitably qualified
UK graduates wanting to research how and why place plays an important role
in health variation. It is likely to be of particular interest to
applicants with a background in geography, sociology, public health,
social policy, or applied social science. The aim of the study will be to
explain better why within the North East of England people living in some
local areas tend to have better health than others and seem to
be ‘resilient’ to the challenges to health posed by social and economic
conditions in the region as a whole. It will help to provide useful
information to NEPHO for public health planning. This PhD project will use
quantitative and ethnographic methods to examine the “resilience” of these
areas and the implications for tackling health inequalities.
The studentship is fully-funded by the Economic and Social Research
Council through a (1+3) CASE award. The studentship will be supervised by
Dr Clare Bambra, Dr Beverley Searle and Professor Sarah Curtis and involve
collaboration with Dr David Chappel of NEPHO. NEPHO is a regional NHS body
with responsibilities for health data collection and analysis
(www.nepho.org.uk). The successful candidate will join a thriving, ESRC
recognized graduate school, and will also work alongside NEPHO in this
critical policy area. They will also be affiliated to the Social Wellbeing
and Spatial Justice Research Cluster and the Wolfson Research Institute
for Health and Wellbeing. The studentship will therefore provide excellent
opportunities for developing academic and policy networks in the important
field of health inequalities research.
