ESRC CASE PhD Studentship - start date September 2008
Location: University of Leeds, School of Sociology and Social Policy
Title of Project: Citizenship Education, Equality and Diversity: exploring responses to citizenship education in English state secondary schools
This three year project rests upon a collaboration between the School of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Leeds and The Citizenship Foundation, an independent London-based education and participation charity that exists to encourage and enable individuals to play an effective role in democratic society. The research has two inter-related aims. First, to explore whether teachers' own backgrounds and beliefs, and their perceptions of the social/cultural backgrounds of their pupils, impact upon the manner in which they implement/interpret the citizenship curriculum. Second, to investigate how a socially diverse range of pupils perceive their personal understandings of citizenship to accord with the model of citizenship transmitted to them by their teacher/s and in their school.
Academic Supervisors: Professor Nick Ellison, Dr Angharad Beckett
The award covers tuition fees for three years at the Home/EU rate. In addition, the successful candidate will receive a £14k p.a. tax-free maintenance award. The first year will see the student primarily based in Leeds, while the second and third years will provide a unique opportunity for the student to be based at the Citizenship Foundation in London.
Applications are welcomed from enthusiastic candidates who have a good honours degree (2:1 or above) in sociology, social/public policy, education or political science. Due to funding restrictions applicants should be UK or EU nationals and hold (or be about to be awarded) a Master's Degree in Research Methods that has ESRC recognition (or must demonstrate that the level of training already undertaken is in line with both the generic and subject specific requirements set out in the ESRC Postgraduate Training Guidelines). Desirable skills include good communication skills, an ability to work as part of a team and experience of working with children or young people.
**Because this studentship will involve working with children under the age of 16, the successful candidate will be required to undertake a Criminal Records Bureau check at enhanced level.**
