worklessness
PhD Studentship
Centre for Translational Research in Public Health
Reference: DurSMH1
Title: Analysis of the use of evidence by Local Area Agreements: the case
of worklessness
Supervisors: Professor David Hunter, Dr Clare Bambra, Senior Lecturer in
Evidence-based Commissioning (to be appointed)
Host institution: School of Medicine and Health, Wolfson Research
Institute, Durham University
Duration: 4 years (1+3) full time from September 2008
Funder: UKCRC via ESRC
Description of the project: Ill-health is a major cause of worklessness and
a particularly pressing issue in the North East for the NHS and local
authorities. The aim of this study is to explore the links between
commissioning decisions and the evidence base in the 16 North East
Spearhead primary care trusts. It is unclear to what extent Spearhead
authorities are utilising this evidence base in delivery plans for Local
Area Agreements. The project will employ a mix of quantitative and
qualitative methods in order to demonstrate whether interventions are being
implemented in the commissioning process.
Person specification: Applicants should hold a first class or upper second
class degree in a relevant behavioural, social science or clinical
discipline. A master’s qualification in a relevant discipline would be an
advantage.
Award details: This is a 4 year full time studentship and will provide an
estimated stipend of £12,940 per annum. The award is available to UK and
other EU nationals only. The award covers fees and an annual stipend at the
standard ESRC rate. Non-UK EU nationals must be resident in the UK for
three years prior to the start of the studentship, otherwise they will be
