SCHOOL OF ENGLISH, MEDIA & THEATRE STUDIES
Lecturer/Assistant Lecturer in Irish Cinema
(Three-Year Contract)
National University of Ireland, Maynooth
Research:
The Department of English and the Centre for Media Studies both have
strong research concentrations of world-class standards, with a
significant cohort of researchers throughout the School working in the
area of Irish Studies. The Lecturer in Irish Cinema will be expected
to contribute to existing and emerging research groupings within the
School. By clearly establishing the School's research strength in the
field of Irish Studies, it will become possible to attract
postgraduate research students to the School in a strategic and
targeted manner. The successful candidate will be expected to not only
have a proven track record in the area of Irish cinema; they will also
be expected to have definite plans for future research in the area.
Teaching:
- The Lecturer in Irish Cinema will contribute to undergraduate
teaching in both the Department of English and Centre for Media
Studies. Given that the School of English, Media and Theatre Studies
at NUI Maynooth is a relatively compact unit, the successful applicant
may be expected to teach in a range undergraduate areas, including
those not strictly within his/her research speciality.
- In addition, within the Centre for Media Studies, existing modules
that currently deal only with television or radio production may be
enhanced by the inclusion of lectures dealing with cinema. This is
true of modules taught as part of the B.A. (Media Studies) [MH109] and
the B.A. and B.Sc. (Multimedia) [MH110].
- The Department of English offers two M.A. programmes: MA in English
- Twentieth-Century Irish Writing and Cultural Theory and MA in
English - Culture, Empire, Postcolonialism. The inclusion of Irish
Cinema on the M.A. in Twentieth-Century Irish Writing will very
usefully help to differentiate it from other offerings in the field,
and the Lecturer in Irish Cinema will contribute to this process.
- The Centre for Media Studies offers an M.A. in Radio and Television
Production, particularly in the area of documentary; a full-time film
lecturer will cater to a strong demand for a greater orientation to
the cinema in this programme.
