Strip maps showing all the major roads were available from John Ogilby's
survey of 1675 - there were many county maps before this (eg Speed) +
Saxton had produced large wall maps of the whole of England + Wales in
20 sheets c 1579 which were still printed many years later (& formed the
basis for the quartermaster maps of the civil war.
They were measured in miles - the mechanism of measurement is well
illustrated in Cartouches in Jansson's maps in which measuring chains
are shown as dragged behind horses.
