Sonic Postcards in Syria

We visit Damascus for another International Sonic Postcard

[Image: "SP In Damascus"] A new element of Expo Brighton is Unconference
– a wiki conference to discuss ideas that intersect with sound art and
experimental music, including digital art, sound terrorism, hardware
hacking, composition, open source, or anything you like…that’s the
point. Basically, the community (as in you) defines the programme for
Unconference.

Sonic Postcards returned to Syria in April, this time in collaboration with
local artists, Bassam Al Bader and Khaled Wazaefi. British composer Pippa
Murphy and visual artist Miriam Nabarro worked in Damascus in partnership
with the British Council and Damascus 2008 Arab Capital of Culture.

April 2008.

He will be greatly missed.

Sonic Arts Network AGM

Plus nominations for a new board member

The next Sonic Arts Network Annual General Meeting will take place at
7.00pm on Friday 6th June at Sonic Arts Network's home at the Jerwood
Space.

After six years of dedicated service to the Sonic Arts Network board, Pippa
Murphy stepped down at the end of March after fulfilling a full two terms
as a trustee. As a member of the board she has supported the organisation
tirelessly, helping to steer SAN through the process of creating a new
organisation.

With Pippa Murphy's departure, Sonic Arts Network is seeking an elected
director to join the board. In applying, please bear in mind that Sonic
Arts Network is in the process of creating a new organisation which will
affect the time commitment needed from SAN trustees. The post is also
likely to be short-term (estimated three to four months). Please send your
nominations by 6pm on Monday 12th May to [log in to unmask]

SOUND PROOF

19 April - 11 May

Curated by Monica Biagioli and Colm Lally and featuring works by Angus
Carlyle, Brown Sierra, Jem Finer, Miller and McAfee Press, Sara Heitlinger
and Franc Purg, Vessna Perunovich with Boja Vasic. Sound Proof is a sound
art exhibition focusing on the site of the 2012 London Olympic Games. Six
artists have been invited to respond to the site in the Lower Lea Valley
and to the wider issues and debates surrounding the Olympic project. Using
sound materials, drawings and annotations the participating artists have
created audio and visual maps that preserve observations of transformation.
Taking sound as an audio cartography, Sound Proof forms a unique recording
of a neighbourhood that will have completely changed by 2012. The
exhibition presents six, 1-hour, sound recordings assembled into a 6-hour
programme, with an accompanying set of visual maps.

New Composition MA at Bath Spa University

>From October 2008 we will be offering a new Composition MA, available in
three routes:

*MA Composition
 *MA Composition (Audio Technologies)
 *MA Composition (Sound and Image)

The Audio Technologies route is likely to be of most interest to Diffusion
readers - we were initially planning to call this route 'Sonic Art', and it
 represents a broad-ranging approach across experimental technology-based
sound work. The 'straight' Composition route is broadly intended for
acoustic (instrumental/vocal) composition, though there will be plenty of
opportunities for crossover into technological/multimedia areas as
appropriate. The Sound and Image route is perhaps the most innovative - it
remains composition-based and sound-focused, but will focus on work in a
multimedia context. We will be looking at Visual Music from the likes of
Oskar Fischinger onwards and working in areas such as experimental music
videos, live audiovisual work, and interdisciplinary practice.

There's detailed information on our School website, at:

Exploring software for music and audio: Cutting edge techniques and
enabling technologies

Saturday 31 May 2008 - 10.00 - 16.00
 Cinema, Frenchay Campus (Room 1N5)

Admission is free and lunch will be provided but: please register

To celebrate the launch of the new MSc Music Technology programme, the
Bristol Institute of Technology presents coda, a symposium exploring
various facets of software and its development across a range of music and
audio applications.

* Music Technology Course Details
 * Music Technology Handbook PDF

All around us the sound world that we experience and take for granted is
constantly evolving. Every year brings new sonic experiences: at the
cinema, on television, in computer games, in art galleries in fact, almost
everywhere. Advances in computing power provide new opportunities to create
and process sounds in real-time that were impossible even five years ago.
This constantly unfolding sonic and technological landscape is inspiring to
both artists and scientists.

Software and software development for music and audio takes many forms:
from large corporate systems providing flexible and sustainable frameworks
for the professional audio and media industries; to the bespoke, often
transient projects of individual artists and musicians. Among these various
forms and approaches, many of the issues for both users and developers are
shared, sometimes these approaches will conflict, and as a result important
questions are raised.

Throughout the day a range of experts will present their work, both
technical and creative, with a view to raising some of these important
questions. Themes of the day include: software for live performance, art
installations, studio/location recording, composition, DSP and
frameworks/platforms (C/C++, Java, Max/MSP). Towards the end of the day
there will be an opportunity to discuss these and other issues with the
day's speakers. In addition to these activities there will be
opportunities, at various points during the day, to experience and interact
with the software, systems and creative work presented.

Integra 2008 Festival & Conference will be held in Birmingham. Building on
the work of the project, the Festival will bring to Birmingham the five
participating ensembles for an unprecedented 3-day perspective on European
live electronic music, with a special focus on mixed-media performances.
The Conference aims to spark a discussion around technology and music
bringing together artistic promoters and decision makers, researchers,
composers and performers. It is a rare occasion to debate across different
domains the challenges and opportunities new technologies bring to music,
and how to solve the existing tensions between musicians and technology.

The Fantastical Reality Radio show needs YOU!

Felicity Ford and Mundane Appreciation need your insights for their
prestigious 'Top Irritating Noises Chart,' their 'What's in your handbag?'
feature and their quest to identify 'The Most Boring Sound Ever.' We are
also keen to discover especially notable messes and their sonic potential
and to find the world's greatest vocal impersonator of household noises.

It is easy to get involved! Simply scrawl us an email containing all/some
of the information listed below:

1.Note an everyday sound that irritates you more than any other. A sound
that makes you grind your teeth, perhaps, or forget what you were thinking
about.

2. Details of whatever is in your handbag right now. Tip it out onto the
nearest available surface and itemise the contents unsparingly.

3. Name a sound that you consider to be unutterably boring and tedious. The
most boring sound you can think of.

4.Details of a messy corner/drawer somewhere in your home or place of work
that you consider to be noteworthy. It could be notable because of size,
rarity of contents or length of tenure or it could be notable because you
love it or had fun doing something else while it was accumulating. We want
to know about your mess!

5. Do you do a brilliant vocal impression of the dishwasher or of airplanes
passing over head? Can you fool your co-workers into thinking that the
computer is on when it isn't using just your voice to impersonate the
persistent hum of its fan? Do you pretend you are a washing-machine when
you are rinsing your mouth after brushing your teeth? If not, does the idea
of trying it out appeal? If you do these, or similar, things, then there is
a chance for you to shine! Tell us about it here.

We revel in these details of life...

Sound:Space - Call for Submissions, South Hill Park

South East Closes Tue 27 May 2008
 Artform: visual arts, Other, sound
Contact Martin Franklin [log in to unmask]

An exciting opportunity has risen to exhibit at South Hill Park as part of
the Sound:Space season on 20 September – 9 November 2008. We invite
proposals from artists exploring the field of sound art and the
representation of sound. We welcome proposals for both moving image/sound
and wall-based work.

The Atrium is one of our busiest exhibition spaces and is used by a wide
range of South Hill Park visitors. The space also combines a café and a
lounge area and we are particularly interested in site-specific works for
