Applications are invited the following ESRC (CASE) studentship in the Graduate School, College of Business, Law and Social Sciences Nottingham Trent University in collaboration with Age Concern England.
Title: 'Diversity and participation in volunteering: the contribution of older volunteers to voluntary organisations and community building'.
Aims
* To examine critically the extent to which voluntary and community organisations engaged in social welfare value older volunteers
* To explore the meanings and motives that underpin older adults participation in, and attachment to, unpaid voluntary work.
* To inform policy making to enhance the citizenship rights for older adults.
* To contribute to academic debates and theoretical approaches to volunteering and active citizenship .
We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic and dynamic individual to join our postgraduate community and to work on a topic of great current relevance. This studentship will appeal to someone wishing to undertake a PhD in applied research, who welcomes the opportunity to work with practitioners as well as academics.
Applications are invited from postgraduate students who have a good social sciences degree in a discipline relevant to the topic (minimum 2:1) and have already completed, or expect to complete by October 2008, an ESRC-recognised masters course.
The studentship commences in October 2008. In addition to the very attractive ESRC (CASE) studentship grant (currently £14,300 per year) the successful applicant will also receive £2,000 per year from Age Concern England.
The Supervisory Team
The supervisory team will comprise of Professors Irene Hardill and Peter Dwyer, from The Graduate School Business Law and Social Sciences, Nottingham Trent University and John Ramsey the National Volunteering Manager for Age Concern England.
