Some time ago, I invited members of the community t propose things
for the tagging session at the DC 2008 Conference. I am now firming
up the schedule for that session, so would like to know who would
like to present something to the community. If there are not too
many, I would like to invite 10 minute presentations, or shorter, and
to be able to accept them from people who will attend the conference
and those who would like to send in prerecorded offerings (if you
don't know how to do this, ask us!).

I notice that Traugott has put out a final call for a KNOS session at
the ECDL (http://www.ecdl2008.org). There is a topic in that event
that should also be of interest to the DC community so I would
welcome a summary (or extension) of what happens at the ECDL meeting
as part of the DC session - here is the topic from the ECDL session:

"Social tagging. Participative user-based approaches to knowledge
organization and description are emerging and attracting significant
community support. What is the role of social tagging and informal
knowledge structures versus established KOS? How do the methods
complement each other? Is it possible or desirable to obtain some
degree of control in social tagging systems?Tags have been about for
a few years now and we are aware of differences in how/why people
write them and therefore how they can be used. The questions now are,
How can we use the tags? How should we support the creation of more
useful tags? What can be done to improve the value of these
contributions in the publication process?"

I see this as an advance on earlier work in the community that has
distinguished the different motivations and therefore different sorts
of tags that people contribute.

In addition to asking what is being done to make better use of tags,
I think we should also ask: What do we know about DC tags? DC tags
have been around for a while as well, used informally within public
tagging systems. Part of the session could be devoted to proposals
for and against, and discussions about, the formalisation of DC
tagging conventions and the development of a DC tagging site along
the lines of a del.icio.us or something like it.........

Please let me know of what you'd like to contribute as soon as you
can (I am late getting this into the program, sorry!)
