Archaeology of the Atlantic World
CALL FOR PAPERS
Deadline: 16 June 2008
Council for Northeast Historical Archaeology
St. Mary’s City, Maryland, USA
October 24 – 26, 2008
The Council for Northeast Historical
Archaeology invites session and individual
paper submissions for the 2008 Annual Meeting
in St. Mary’s City, Maryland. Founded in 1634,
St. Mary’s City is the site of the fourth
permanent settlement in British North America.
It is located on the St. Mary’s River near the
confluence of the Chesapeake Bay and the
Potomac River. St. Mary’s City has been
recognized as a National Historic Landmark
since 1969. It is currently part of an outdoor
living history museum, mandated to preserve
and protect the archaeological evidence from the
17th century. The Landmark is shared with St.
Mary’s College of Maryland and Trinity
Episcopal Church.
“…once the Metropolis of Maryland,” St.
Mary’s City reflects the diaspora of people,
ideas, and materials circulating in the Atlantic
World. Neighboring St. Mary’s College of
Maryland established roots on this landscape in
1840. Together, Historic St. Mary’s City and St.
Mary’s College will host this year’s conference
with the theme of the Archaeology of the
Atlantic World.
Suggested sessions for the 2008 conference
include:
♦ Archaeological Exhibits in the Mid-Atlantic ♦
Heritage Tourism ♦ Conservation Strategies for
Archaeological Collections ♦ Future of Archaeology
We welcome and encourage other thematic
sessions and general papers. We are also
accepting poster submissions. Students are
strongly encouraged to submit papers for the
annual student paper competition. For session
ideas or any questions, please contact the
program co-chairs (Anne Grulich and Ruth
Mitchell) at [log in to unmask]
