A Woman's Place: Locating the Feminine in Modern & Contemporary Culture
Newcastle University, Friday June 20, 2008
Keynote Address: Dr Rachel Carroll, University of Teesside
'Safe Spaces for Women: Situating Bodies and Theories'
Recent theoretical discussions of (female) corporeality and subjectivity have steadily moved towards an exploration of the relationship between space, place and the body. The growth of the global population and the expansion of the modern urban environment has led theorists to reconsider issues surrounding ownership and utilisation of space, as well as the effect of space upon the self. This has subsequently raised questions regarding how certain spaces are gendered, leading to cartographies of power relations in which marginalised groups are confined to certain types of place. This one day postgraduate conference seeks to engage with arguments from a range of disciplines such as literary and film studies, architecture, gender studies, geography, and sociology among others, in order to reflect on the relationship between space and femininity in modern and contemporary culture. This event is funded by the Feminist and Women's Studies Association (UK and Ireland)
Conference panels include 'Renegotiating Space', 'Real Applications', 'Private Places' and 'Thinking Space Creatively'.
