Job: One Postdoctoral and two Ph.D. scholarships on ubiquitous/pervasive
usability and security
The Laboratory for Usage-centered Software Engineering (LabUSE) at the
University of Madeira, in
partnership with Carnegie Mellon's Usable Privacy and Security
laboratory (CUPS) is seeking high-
quality candidates to work in the area of ubiquitous/pervasive usability
and security, with a
particular focus on phishing.
Candidates should have a strong background in computer science, and we
particularly welcome
applicants with a background in either security, ubiquitous systems or
usability methods.
Applicants should demonstrate both theoretical and practical interests,
should be able to carry out
team work and have excellent spoken and written English.
The successful candidates will work closely with members of LabUSE and
CUPS. The appointment
to these posts will be full-time with a negotiable start date.
Potential candidates should contact Prof. Vassilis Kostakos

is a research unit in
the Department of Mathematics and Engineering at the University of
Madeira. Members of Lab:USE
also have responsibilities in teaching in the various courses of the
department, in particular in the
Professional Master of Human-Computer Interaction that is offered in
collaboration with the HCI
Institute of Carnegie Mellon University. In 2008, Lab:USE has once again
expanded and now
consists of 15 experienced researchers representing no less than 11
different nationalities.
About CUPS
The CMU Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory (http://cups.cs.cmu.edu)
brings together
researchers working on a diverse set of projects related to
understanding and improving the
usability of privacy and security software and systems. The privacy and
security research
community has become increasingly aware that usability problems severely
impact the
effectiveness of mechanisms designed to provide security and privacy in
software systems. Indeed,
one of the four grand research challenges in information security and
assurance identified by the
Computing Research Association in 2003 is: "Give end-users security
controls they can
understand and privacy they can control for the dynamic, pervasive
computing environments of
the future." This is the challenge that CUPS strives to address. Our
research employs a
combination of three high-level strategies to make secure systems more
usable: building systems
that "just work" without involving humans in security-critical
functions; making secure systems
intuitive and easy to use; and teaching humans how to perform
security-critical tasks.
