CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Research Methods for Human-Computer Interaction Tutorial
Held at British HCI 2008 Conference
1st September, 2008
http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~pcairns/RMHCI.html
**************************************************
Are you confused about which method would best suit your research? Do
you think it might help to learn more about experimental design? Or how
to do qualitative research? The aim of this tutorial is to help
researchers, particularly early career researchers, to address these
questions by developing knowledge of different research methods used in
HCI and how they might apply to their particular research problems.
HCI draws on a wide variety of disciplines which means that there is a
wide variety of methods that a researcher could use and moreover new
researchers may have education or experience in only a small fraction of
the methods available. In this tutorial we will introduce you to a
variety of different methods, their strengths and pitfalls and examples
of best practice in HCI.
********** TOPICS **********
The topics covered in class will vary depending on the interests of the
participants but could include:
Eyetracking
Statistics
Experimental design
Qualitative research
Questionnaire design
Cognitive modelling
Formal modelling
Additionally, we will be using writing as a way of formulating research
ideas and arriving at suitable methods.
*********** TUTORS **********
Dr Anna Cox, University College London
Dr Paul Cairns, University of York
Prof. Harold Thimbleby, University of Wales, Swansea
Natalie Webb, freelance usability consultant
*********** TO TAKE PART **********
Please send a two page paper outlining your current research project,
the methods that you are currently considering using for your research
and what you hope to gain from attending the tutorial.
This will be used to help us tailor the tutorial to best suit your needs
and the needs of the class.
Please send your papers to Dr Anna Cox, [log in to unmask] or Dr Paul
Cairns, [log in to unmask]
Deadline: 27th June, 2008
Notification of acceptance: 21st July, 2008
********** ACCOMPANYING BOOK **********
The tutorial coincides with the publication of:
Cairns, P., Cox, A. (2008) Research Methods for Human-Computer
Interaction. Cambridge University Press.
This will provide a useful resource that complements the activities of
the tutorial.
