Dear Jessamy
May I recommend that you to go to the Institute of Conservation's
Conservation Register - www.conservationregister.com - which provides
an impartial and vetted referral service for the public and
institutions, free of charge, to search for a suitable book conservator.
Conservation busineses must be run by Accredited conservators in order
to be eligible to apply to go on the Register, as well as meeting the
Register's additional strict quality requirements. I feel sure the book
conservation manager in TNA conservation department can provide a
specification for the chosen contractor or for a tender competition if
there are lots to do.
The Register is supported and represented on its Advisory Board by major
puiblic agencies - The National Trust, English Heritage, National
Preservation Office, Council for the Care of Churches, MLA, Historic
Scotland and others, who all require a high quality standard mechanism
for commissioning conservation work and wish to use an impartial service
to avoid the liability of using 'preferred' contractors. Some of these
agencies will only allow work to be commissioned by their regional
offices etc from Registered practices.
I hope this is helpful. If you need any more assistance, call the
Register on 0207 785 3804.
Best wishes
Chris
