1. Urban Renewal and Community Cohesion - Eastern European Labour Migration. PhD Research Studentship, University of Manchester and New East Manchester. (REF CC1).
The PhD will examine the nature of the settlement of migrants from the new European Union accession countries to areas of urban regeneration the UK. The key research questions are: What are the demographics of recent migrants from EU accession countries to the UK? What contribution are these new settlers making to local communities and the economic regeneration of local areas? How can rapid population change in small areas be measured? The research will combine qualitative and quantitative methods and include two local case studies.
2. Community Cohesion and Healthcare: A Study of Overseas Trained South Asian Doctors in the UK. PhD Research Studentship, University of Manchester and BAPIO. (Ref CC2).
The research will focus on examining the identities and experiences of overseas-trained South-Asian doctors in the UK. It is estimated that almost half of hospital doctors and a fifth of GPs in the UK in the late 1970s were born overseas. The key research questions include: how did overseas trained South Asian doctors see their roles and view the communities around them? What insights do the experiences of these highly educated labour migrants give to our understanding of community cohesion?
The PhDs represent a unique opportunity to investigate challenging social policy issues. As part of the PhD there will be opportunities for training in a range of research and employment related skills including: project management, data analysis, communication, writing and presenting. There will also be opportunities to attend conferences. Some part-time teaching may also be possible.
The PhD studentships include a tax-free living allowance and research and travel expenses. For application details please go to www.ccsr.ac.uk
