The emerging "knowledge economy" poses a number of new challenges which organisations - whether private or public sector - must tackle if satisfactory outcomes are to be achieved.  Many of these challenges can be addressed by improving the management of knowledge through the strategic introduction of Knowledge Management Initiatives.Implementing Knowledge Management Initiatives offers all those who are responsible for or who are considering promoting the better management of knowledge within their organisations a practical arena to explore the principal issues that have to be addressed within such projects.
 
While necessarily generic and self -contained, this one day seminar is designed to form the basis for further in-depth workshops on future dates. These forthcoming workshops will deal with specific topics as discussed and requested by delegates during the course of the day.  The seminar is designed to complement Nick Willard’s associated course, which introduces Knowledge Management (KM) and is also available through Aslib.
 
Unlike many other organisational practices, KM cannot work as an imposed discipline. Its efficacy depends in the end, on people understanding its benefits to them, to their teams and departments and to the organisation as a whole, and in their willingness to let the aims of KM inform and guide everything they do at work.  It is therefore important to seek out ways in which KM practices can be embedded into organisational culture at key levels, from senior managers through to individual staff members.
 
The seminar explores the essential elements of a KM Strategy for chartingthe way forward, and examines the key role of the Knowledge Audit as a basic framework for discovering and unlocking organisational knowledge within operational environments. These processes are set alongside the need to facilitate changes of attitude and behaviour in individuals in their working relationships where ever necessary, and will sometimes drive changes in processes and procedures as well.
 
The principal subject areas that will be presented and are explored during this one day seminar include:
- Making Knowledge Manageable 
- Discovering Organisational Knowledge 
- Embedding KM in Organisational Culture 
- Scoping, Planning and Managing KM Initiatives 
- Sharing experience gained from actual case studies 
 
At the end of the day, you will depart with a broader and deeper understanding of how to improve the management of knowledge through implementing knowledge management initiatives.
