Hi all
I got this email ffrom Alice Maynard, Sue's sister this morning.
Kirsten
Sue, my bright, strong, powerful, determined, honourable, formidable,
supportive, loving and beloved big sister, died this morning shortly after 3
o'clock.
Most of you already know that she had been in intensive care since the end
of March following a cardiac arrest. For the first few weeks, she was
getting
steadily better, but as some of you will know that she experienced a second
cardiac arrest just over two weeks ago, from which she never recovered.
She was a good friend to many of you and my close confidante. She was a
staunch advocate of the social model of disability and kept many of us on
the
straight and narrow. In many ways she was one of the unsung heroines of the
disabled people's movement. She was a leading light in the Association of
Disabled Professionals in the 1980s and 1990s, and as such was one of the
founders of BCODP, now UKDPC. Since then she has been involved in countless
campaigns to further disabled people's equality and, eventually, her work
was recognised by the award of an MBE a couple of years ago.
Many of you will also know that she fought for the right of disabled people
to live. She was the victim of a Do Not Resuscitate notice during her last
stay in hospital in the late 1990s, and campaigned against the assumption
that disabled people's lives are not worth living. This time around she
made
her wishes quite clear and until she died peacefully this morning doctors
and nurses at St James' Hospital in Leeds did all they could to respect her
choice
to fight for every ounce she could squeeze out of life.
I am proud that in death, as in life, she blazed a trail for other disabled
people.
I do not as yet know what the funeral arrangements will be, but I will let
you know in due course. Please forgive a mass email, but I don't know how
else
to let you all know. I do know that there will be people that I should have
copied this email to that I have missed off, for which I apologise, and I
would be grateful if you would let others who knew and respected Sue know.
Alice
