Dear Friend
Claude Ndeh is a French teacher who was tortured and imprisoned for eight
months in Cameroon for protesting against the illegal executions of nine
young boys. Claude and his wife have three young children. They were granted
the right to remain in the UK by the High Court but the Home Office has
overturned their ruling. Two of Claude's children have Sickle Cell Anaemia
and Sheffield Children's Hospital have warned that they will live only a few
years if they are forced to return to Cameroon.
On Saturday 10th May Claude and his family were arrested and taken to
Yarlswood Immigration Detention Centre. They have been told that they are to
be deported back to Cameroon this Saturday 17th May.
Last night we spoke to Claude who is still at Yarlswood Removal Centre with
his family. He told us that conditions for him and his family are very bad.
His 2 children who have Sickle Cell Anaemia are not being given the
medication they need. The family are not eating. The "drinking" water they
have access to is dirty as are the toilets. The family of 5 are living in
one room which has only 2 single beds. Their three year old son is having to
sleep on the floor which is very cold. Cold temperatures exacerbate Sickle
Cell Anaemia so he has become ill.
When Claude and his family were arrested on Saturday they were not allowed
to take any clothes other than those they were wearing with them. Nor were
they allowed to change their baby's nappy or take any other possessions. We
are going to visit Claude tomorrow and will try to take some of their
clothes. We have been told we cannot take food, toys, or anything else other
than money.
Please send a fax, email, ring, write to Jackie Smith MP (the Home
Secretary) and ask that Claude and his family not be deported and be given
the right to stay in the UK. Her office telephone number is 020 7035 4848,

The National Union of Teachers supports Claude's campaign to stay in
Britain. If you are an NUT member please ask your general secretary and
branch to urgently contact the Home Office and ask that Claude be given
leave to stay in the UK.
Please help us keep Claude in Sheffield.
Best wishes
Linda Laurie & Mike Higgins.
