PRESS RELEASE
EU-funded films sweep up the prestigious Palme d'0r and Grand Prize at
Cannes (26 May 2008)This was a good last day at this year's Cannes Film
Festival. Amongst the films receiving honours at the awards ceremony
yesterday night were 4 films funded by the EU's Media Programme: "Entre
Les Murs" directed by Laurent Cantet (France) won the Palme d'Or, whilst
"Gomorra" directed by Matteo Garrone (Italy), swept up the Grand Prize
of the festival. "Le silence de Lorna" directed by Luc and Jean-Pierre
Dardenne (Belgium) won the prize for the best scenario, and the film
"Tulpan", directed by Sergey Dvortsevoy (Kazahstan) was awarded the Prix
Un Certain Regard. These films were amongst the 14 screened at the
Festival that had been developed or distributed with support of more
than EUR 900 000 from the European Union's MEDIA programme

GEANT network helps create real-time virtual telescope 11,000 km in
diameter (26 May 2008)Telescopes from around the world were successfully
connected in real-time, enabling astronomers from the EXPReS project to
simultaneously observe active galaxies in the distant universe. GEANT2,
the high bandwidth, pan-European research network managed by research
networking organisation DANTE, was at the heart of this collaboration,
working with other research data networks across the globe, under the
coordination of the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE).

CALL FOR TENDERS
Contract notice - Monitoring of the compliance by audiovisual media
service providers in the Member States with the provisions of Chapter
IIa (Article 3e-3g) and Chapter IV of the Audiovisual Media Services
Directive (Framework contract)
(Deadline: 01/09/2008) The study aims at monitoring the effective
application of the rules on audiovisual commercial communications in the
Member States.

European industry signing up to "eCall" for faster road emergency
services (23 May 2008)The eCall Memorandum of Understanding (eCall MoU)
is about to be signed by Vodafone Europe. Other important industry
players, such as NXP semiconductors, have also expressed their interest
to sign up to the MoU. With their signature, these companies commit
themselves to actively supporting the timely implementation and
deployment of eCall, the pan-European in-vehicle emergency call system.
