The clinical addictions research group based at the Medical School’s
Department of Psychiatry has developed a programme of work around the
implementation of innovative medical and psychological treatments for
addiction which has gained a national reputation. Working alongside
clinicians in the statutory and non-statutory services in the region, a
comprehensive system of treatment of addiction problems has been
developed. This programme will deliver training in the delivery of this
system, setting it in the context of the wider evidence base in the
addictions field.
Programme Structure
The Programme will be offered on a part-time basis and consist of 6 x 20
credit modules spread over two years with a dissertation being completed
in year 3.

1. Introduction to Substance Misuse
2. Management of Co-Morbid Mental Health and Substance Misuse Problems
3. Assessment, Case Management & Harm Reduction
Year 2
4. Building Motivation for Treatment
5. Changing Addictive Behaviours
6. Rehabilitation and Aftercare
7. Research Methods
Year 3
Research Project and Dissertation
Modules 1 and 7 will be compulsory for the full MSc course, in addition to
4 of the remaining 5 modules. In addition, students will be able to
register for a PG Certificate (60 credits or 1 year) or a PG Diploma (120
credits). Modules 1 and 7 will only be compulsory for the MSc
qualification.
