This thread has produced some very interesting contributions. At SWAP
the closing date of a student essay competition we ran on 'what makes a
good social policy/social work lecturer' has just passed and we have
some great responses from students - including one from a social work
student about the way a social policy lecturer captured the group's
interest in social policy. We will be publishing these on our website in
a few weeks and also hope to produce a short guide from the essays,
supported by academics' quotes - so we would like to ask permission to
use some of the comments in these threads and will contact people
individually about this.
We have just published another guide on 'maximising student learning in
lectures' - available from our resources/publications section in our NEW
website launched last week.
Also on the website in the section on digital resources you will find a
selection of video clips we recorded last summer at the SPA conference
with contributors such as Pete Alcock. These are on You Tube and
embedded in our site - we think these will inspire students!

Although it is subscription only service (you may be able to get 30 days
free trial) it has some free items and has high quality video material
and podcasts from a wide range of national policy conferences that could
provide great material to use in teaching.
Other video resources are available from the BBC sound archive at the
Spoken Word project and SWAP funded a special collection of social
policy resources go to

In the publications section of our website you will also find a set of
case studies on 'using social policy research in teaching - and these
suggest students find 'real life' examples engaging.
