The rigorous, stimulating films of Jean-Marie Straub and Daniele Huillet have
provoked strong reactions since their debut in 1965. They consider the
soundtrack as important as the visual image and reject post-production
dubbing in favour of direct sound. Most of their films are based on
pre-existing works of art. This screening includes two recent films: a short
political pamphlet, and an adaptation of the poet Joachim Gasquet's account
of discussions about painting with Paul Cezanne.
Jean-Marie Straub and Daniele Huillet, EUROPA 2005 - 27 OCTOBER, 2005, video
A moving protest film in memory of Bouna Traore, 15, and Zyed Benna, 17, who
were electrocuted and killed while hiding from the police in a high-voltage
electric plant in Clichy-sous-Bois on 27 October 2005.
Jean-Marie Straub and Daniele Huillet, A VISIT TO THE LOUVRE, 2004, 35mm
'Above all, this is an artist's manifesto, that of Cezanne in the face of the
entire history of Western art; and that of the Straubs, who have already made
one film about the painter (Cezanne, 1989) set around the Mt. Sainte-Victoire
region, and who aspire to be artists of the people and the earth, poets of
the real, as much as Cezanne and Courbet before them.' (Frederic Bonnaud)
Programme duration 76 minutes
