Thanks for the Zenglish responses--yes, i saw the zip poems and kept
going.
Judy--The moon is the moon everywhere, and a tree is a tree, but language
systems are different. There is no mystical difference between kanji
and words built of alphabets, there is a real difference that experience
will show you if you take the time to find out.
It does take time (in my case, about 12 years), and it is difficult to
do, but I recommend it.
Also, I have to say that Asian culture is quite different from Western
culture. You find that out pretty quickly if you make your living here.
Leith Morton used to be on this list years back--he's a translator I
respect. If he's out there...? Would be interested in going back to
the idea of kanji and metaphor. Any help with that would be great.
I've been translating Japanese children's songs and Enka for a popular
English-Japanese dictionary here (almost finished), so I'm actively
involved in the bridging those differences of which I spoke.
