Dear Chris,
Even when you say "I experienced" this or that, in the final output you (we) shouldn't forget also all those who participated in a way or in another in the experience and in our reporting. For instance all those in bibliographic references, mandatory in scientific writings, are among them.
So, unless it is an entirely artistic piece (poetry, personal prose, etc.), I think the "we" would be much more indicated than the "I", except when, in a team production, one wishes to highlight a personal contribution.
