Forced Marriage: Policies and Practice.
A one day course for practitioners working in schools, local authorities,
legal services, the police, social services, health, domestic violence
forums, women’s organisations, youth organisations and community agencies.
It will also be of interest to policy makers and academics working in the
area of forced marriage and domestic violence.

Coordinators:
Dr Geetanjali Gangoli and Dr Melanie McCarry
(Violence Against Women Research Group, School for Policy Studies,
University of Bristol).
Dr Gangoli and Dr McCarry are experts in the area of domestic violence,
forced marriage and honour related violence, and have worked on projects
funded by local authorities, Northern Rock Foundation and Home Office on
these issues. They have also worked extensively with practitioners in the
area, and have provided training on these issues.
Aims:
- Identify issues to be learned in order to further support women,
men and children facing the threat of FM [Session 1]
- Examine ways to better understand the cultural contexts in which
FM takes place. [Session 2]
- Identify the challenges practitioners are faced with when working
with offenders, survivors, communities and families [Session 3]
- Discuss practical strategies for tackling FM in UK [Sessions 3 and
4]
- Raise awareness about future directions [Sessions 3 and 4]
Content
Session 1: Theoretical areas : definitions of forced marriage
Session 2: Forms of Forced Marriage
o Social, Cultural, Economic underpinnings of forced marriage,
including sexual control, gendered dimensions and FM of yp with
disabilities.
o Trafficking, child marriage, bride price, arranged marriage, dowry
and links with forced marriage
Session 3: Policies
o Police, health, education, immigration
Session 4: Legislation: Criminal vs Civil law or others forms of
intervention
