Is this not merely a transliteration of witherite into a language that does not use W and th or does not use them in the same way?

Mike
The only reference I can track down at the moment is from "Hey's Mineral
Index, Third Edition by A M Clark, p738":
Viterite, syn. of witherite.
D. Siftar and I. Jurkovic (1961) Geol. Vjesnik, 14, 89; abstr. In
Min.Abstr. 16, 540. Croation spelling of witherite.
Unfortunately, because our Science Reference Library is unavailable at
present due to refurbishment, I can't go and check the abstract - sorry!
Hope this is of some help.
Cheers

Thank you for the responses on silver, there is clearly no consensus.
I have come across viterite as a synonym for witherite but cannot find,
in
my immediate resources, where the name was first used, is it more or
less an
alterative spelling of witherite or is it a name in its own right, if
the
latter can anyone help with its origin. For those who may stumble across
it
the Star Wars connections is spurious.
