Dear Mike,
Whilst very silver rich ores have been found close to the surface in many
instances in Cardiganshire (and elsewhere), there were two mines where silver
content was increasing in depth. One was Esgair-Mwyn where is was noticeably
increasing in the lower levels, and the other was South Darren I believe (but I
might be wrong with the latter as I can't remember off-hand).
The Esgai-Mwyn case is interesting, since it demonstrates a deeper seated
deposit than the others, and does seem to dispel the myth (in Mid-Wales anyway),
that rich Ag ores are only found at surface. It also begs the question if
the veins in other mines had been followed deeper, whether there was the
possibility that they might have opened out again.
This begs more questions than answers!!!
Regards, Bernard
