Content Marketing in the Digital Universe
Thursday 15 May 2008
Venue: King's Fund, 11 - 13 Cavendish Square, London, W1G 0AN
Chair: Della Sar, Nature Publishing Group
The web has brought publishers new marketing opportunities in the past few
years. It has also given librarians, societies, authors, readers or casual
users the ability to enter into direct dialogue with us. The ability to
target marketing messages whether they promote image, content or product has
become accurate, immediate, interactive and relatively inexpensive.
However, in some instances, it has also meant a deluge of e-mails, annoying
banners and messages.
The aim of this seminar is to consider how any publisher can take advantage
of the new opportunities, whether they have one book, or one thousand
journals. It will provide an update on new developments and ideas and look
outside our immediate industry to see what lessons we can learn. For
updates to the agenda please visit the Facebook Events page at:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=8382891639.
Who should attend? This seminar is aimed at marketing staff but will also be
relevant for Editorial, and Electronic Publishing staff who have input into
marketing strategy

Managing your Publisher
Wednesday 21 May 2008
British Institute of Radiology, 36 Portland Place, London, W1B 1AT
Chair: Professor Philip Steer, Editor-in-Chief, BJOG
Journals can often be a major source of income for a society that is then
used to carry out other society activities. The majority of societies do not
publish their own journal(s) and are consequently reliant on finding a
publisher to do so on their behalf. How do you find a suitable publisher
and, once you do, how do you manage that relationship so the publisher
publishes the journal as the society wishes? Who is in control?
There are many aspects to managing a publisher, from setting up the details
of the initial contract, working with the publisher on a daily basis, to
receiving the revenue. How do you ensure that you have the best or fairest
arrangement with your publisher? What should you have in your contract? How
do you ensure that your journal is published and promoted to the standard
that you expect? Who do you deal with day to day, and most importantly what
do you do when it all goes wrong? This seminar will look at the different
aspects of the Society-Publisher arrangement. This is an opportunity to
exchange ideas with experts and colleagues on how to make the most of this
important working relationship.
Who should attend? This seminar will appeal to editors, managing editors,
society officers and publishers involved in publishing society journals.
