One of the major things to consider as regards UKMARC is that it is no
longer supported by the BL. Nothing is being updated and it is
effectively dead! If RDA is accepted by LC and the BL, UKMARC will lack
many of the new features which will have to be added to MARC21 to cope
with new cataloguing rules.
If you're considering a new LMS it really doesn't make sense to go with
a UKMARC one.
The BL has been using MARC21 since the middle of 2004 and every year
more libraries move over to that format when they purchase new LMSs.

Subject: Moving from UKMARC to MARC 21
Dear all,
At present, we catalogue items at my institution on our library
managemen= t=20 system Unicorn in UKMARC format but have been advised to
move to MARC 21.=
I would be grateful if people could let me know the following:
- If people have moved from UKMARC to MARC 21 and why they moved
- Experiences of using MARC 21
- the advantages and disadvantages of moving to MARC 21
- any hints or tips at dealing with MARC 21
Thanks very much
