Hello Peter,
I had similar problems on my site (GR-07-UOI-HEPLAB)
and seems like it was due to the last "yum update" I did
for "Release of UPDATE 18 to gLite 3.1. Priority: Normal".
What I finally did was to restart the SE.
After that, things seem to be normal again.
