GIS Project Scientist
£27,622 - £36,416
Health Protection Agency
Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response, Porton Down, Salisbury
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent body that protects
the health and well-being of everyone in England and Wales. The Agency
plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in
preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation
occur. We also prepare for new and emerging threats, such as a bio-
terrorist attack or a virulent new strain of pathogen.
The GIS Team at the Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response is
responsible for providing GIS services across the Agency. This includes
development of GIS capabilities underpinning HPA Emergency Preparedness
and Response. The GIS team forms a key component of Emergency Response
Division’s Microbial Risk Assessment (MRA) group. This consists of a
multidisciplinary group of mathematical modellers, epidemiologists,
geographic information system (GIS) and IT development specialists that
provides a range of underpinning research, and technical and scientific
support to assist in emergency preparedness and response operations. This
includes developing evidence-based risk assessments to help advise the
Department of Health, Health Protection Agency and related organisations
on contingency planning and public health countermeasures ahead of time
for new and (re-)emerging infectious disease threats. The group also
develops and provides specialist systems to help with training exercises
and real-time outbreak management and control based on its recognized
capabilities in GIS, data analysis, visualisation and modelling.
A GIS Project Scientist is required to provide support to senior members
of the GIS Team and to take responsibility for specific aspects of GIS
service provision. The post holder will contribute to a wide range of
projects ranging from development and application of GIS technologies for
response to Health emergencies and the use of GIS to better understand
emerging infectious disease risks to the UK. You will be educated to at
least first degree level in GIS or an Environmental subject with a
significant GIS component and have at least 4 years experience of GIS
application within government, research or commercial organisations. You
will have advanced knowledge of ESRI products as both data management and
analytical tools and an interest in the application of environmental
datasets to health research. Good communication skills are required. The
successful candidate will be required to apply for, and obtain, UK
Security Clearance.
In addition to ongoing training, we offer a friendly and supportive
working culture with flexible working, excellent staff amenities including
a restaurant, nursery for 0-5 years, open learning facilities, sports and
social facilities, generous leave allowances, pensions and life assurance.
Closing date: 25th April 2008.
