Dear All,
This is a bit at short notice (see below, at least not much chance to
forget about the talk).
ALL WELCOME!
Dear Colleagues,
*A reminder that the Spring 2008 ISET European Interdisciplinary Seminar
Series, "Memory of War" continues on 22 April, 6:00-7:30pm with a talk
on /Perpetrators or Victims? Shifting German Memories of War/, by Inge
Weber-Newth, London Metropolitan University.*
In recent years Germany has seen a significant public reminiscing about
the war which focuses on German suffering caused particularly by Allied
bombing of German cities and forced migrations from the former eastern
territories. Initiated by leading figures in the cultural and literary
scene and supported by the mass media it is claimed that German
suffering has not been dealt with in discussion or histories of war,
hence excluding it from national memory. This paper examines the
development of the shift in paradigm from perpetrator to victim in the
context of German post-war development. It suggests that collective
memory went through stages in which specific memories were taboo whilst
others were permitted. Working through one stage led to the development
of a new set of acceptances/rejections. The paper also considers the
meaning of the memory boom for German society and possible implications
for the historiography of the Nazi period.
*Inge Weber-Newth* is Lecturer in German/Applied Language Studies at
London Metropolitan University and associate member of ISET. Her main
research interests are in post-war German and European migrations.
Recent publications include the following co-authored and co-edited
books: /Labour & Love, Deutsche in Grossbritannien nach dem Zweiten
Weltkrieg/ (2000); /European Immigrants in Britain 1933-1950/ (2003);
/German Migrants in Post-war Britain, an enemy embrace/ (2006). She was
also the co-organiser of the two conferences /Beyond the Camps/ and
/Forced Labour/ (2003 and 2006) and the co-editor of both conference
proceedings.
I look forward to seeing you there - please feel free to pass this on to
anyone interested.
