Dear Keith
I fully agree with Richard. This is something which would have universal appeal, and not English place-name searches. For starters, I know we are interested in this in Denmark, too.
How are these searches constructed? Will there have to be one writen up for each place-name-type, or is it 'automatised' for any kind of search?
All the best
Peder Gammeltoft

Keith,
This strikes me as potentially very useful indeed.

Subject: Re: [EPNL] 1:50K Gazetteer
I've often felt the need for some kind of a pattern-matching search
facility for place-names, so we can look up names similar to a given
one. I've written a prototype for use with this gazetteer. I'd be
interested to get any feedback, and if there seems to be a need, I will
make this software available.
Examples:
Names matching 'Caldecote' exactly:
> lookup Caldecote
Caldecote: SP355945 SP685515 SP885425 TL145885 TL235385
TL345575 Caldecote Dyke Fm: TL175885
Caldecote Fen: TL185895
Caldecote Fm: TF745035
Caldecote Hill: TQ155945
Caldecote Manor Fm: TL225585
Lower Caldecote: TL175465
Upper Caldecote: TL165455
Names starting with C (^C), followed by either a or o ([ao]), followed
by l, followed by optional d (d?), followed by cot, optionally followed
by either t or e ([te]?), and then ending ($):
> lookup ^C[ao]ld?e?cot[te]?$
Calcot: SP085105 SU665715
Calcott: SJ445135 TR175625
Caldecote: SP355945 SP685515 SP885425 TL145885 TL235385 TL345575
Caldecott: SP865935 SP985685 SU495965
Colcot: ST115695
Adding an optional u after the a or o:
> lookup ^C[ao]u?ld?e?cot[te]?$
Calcot: SP085105 SU665715
Calcott: SJ445135 TR175625
Caldecote: SP355945 SP685515 SP885425 TL145885 TL235385 TL345575
Caldecott: SP865935 SP985685 SU495965
Caulcott: SP505245 SP995425
Colcot: ST115695
So we easily find related names, which might be missed in a dictionary
search. Imagine having indices to EPNS volumes like this!
Keith
