I am pleased to announce the dates for the following Geological Society Accredited CPD courses run by the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Portsmouth as follows:
Soil and rock description to the new European Standard - 19-20 June 2008 (cost £300)
This two day CPD covers the description of soil and rock material and mass to the new European/British Standards BS EN ISO 14688 & 14689. The course is led by Nick Koor, an Engineering Geologist with over twenty year’s international consulting experience in geotechnical and geological engineering in Europe, South East Asia and China. Nick therefore brings with him a wealth of experience in soil and rock characterisation from around the world. Andrew Poulsom, an Engineering Geologists with extensive experience in rock characterisation, will also lecture on the course.
An Introduction to Landslides and Slope Stability - 26-27 June 2008 (cost £300)
This two-day CPD course is targeted at professionals interested in advancing their knowledge base in the identification, investigation, analysis and remediation of landslide and slope instability hazards. The course will consider the causes and mechanisms of mass movements and will train the participants in the identification, characterisation and classification of such movements.
Introduction to Geology and Basic Field Geology - 7 - 9 July 2008 (cost £450)
This three-day CPD course is targeted at Civil Engineers working in the civil and ground engineering sectors. It is designed to provide an introduction to important concepts of geology and geological processes, which are relevant to civil and ground engineering projects. The course will provide an overview of the main rock types and rock forming minerals; geological and tectonic processes; Quaternary history and deposits including glacial and periglacial features. The course will include practical exercises on the identification of different minerals and rock types in hand specimen and will culminate in a one-day field excursion to Lulworth Cove in Dorset.
These courses are very popular so I suggest early registration to avoid disappointment. Courses are kept small (15 max) so that a more interactive environment can be developed.
