Requirements:
Technical Lead - Web Archiving Programme
At the British Library, we've pioneered knowledge sharing on a global scale with our world-class collection of printed material. We now need to move forward and start setting the standards in the digital era. And we're relying on you to get us there.
For a proven IT specialist with a strong background in software development, it's an opportunity to take your passion for the web to a role where it will impact on research and learning for generations to come.
The transient nature of the Internet means that a great deal of information can easily be lost over the years. It will fall to you to help us create the software that will capture it, and make it available to future researchers.
With solid experience of delivering complex IT systems under your belt, you'll lead the technical aspects of the Library's web archiving programme. You'll be familiar with structured methodologies, software design, object orientated languages and the delivery of IT services.
Sufficient knowledge of Linux/Unix, Apache and Apache Tomcat will be required, as will an understanding of configuration management. You'll also be a great communicator, since a lot of your work will involve liaising with external bodies, both nationally and internationally, building on various sources of knowledge to find the best possible software solutions.
A background in archiving is not necessary for this post. We're more interested in your sheer enthusiasm for the web. Working for one of the most prestigious libraries in the world will just be an added bonus for you.
You will be required to travel frequently between the Library's main sites of Boston Spa and St Pancras - and will occasionally be asked to travel internationally.
Closing date: 30 April 2008. Interviews will take place on 13 May 2008.
