Two suggestions:
1. Run o in a subprocess (put it in parentheses) or better yet, use
screen. Then you can detach the screen session, which is very
convenient.
2. Use zsh. It is syntactically very similar to bash, but has a
better completion function system and much more fun to use. Then if
you really want to geek out, you can use my zsh initialization stuff
that includes a lot of custom functions and completions for
crystallographic software.
