CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on
Usability and Software Development Methodologies in Scandinavia
International Journal of Technology and Human Interaction (IJTHI)
Submission Deadline: May 31st, 2008
Guest Editors: Steve Love, Bendik Bygstad and George Ghinea
Introduction
Although Systems Development Methodologies (SDMs) and Usability have
some similarities (they are both applied disciplines, and they play
important roles in systems development) their differences are much more
obvious. While SDMs originated from systems engineering and software
economics in the late 1960s, usability was developed in the late 1980s
and early 1990s from HCI research, cognitive psychology and
phenomenology. While systems development was - with some notable
exceptions - mainly concerned about the inner workings of the system,
usability focused on the user. Thus, the role of the user is different;
in systems development the user is a means to elicit requirements, while
for usability work the users are the prime means for designing the
system.
Objective of the Special Issue
The objective of the Special Issue is to reunite both perspectives in a
novel way. We solicit both theoretical and practical submissions related
to this topic, at different levels of the information and knowledge
society. Recognising the role that Scandinavian countries have played in
the development of both Usability and SDM frameworks, the special issue
will bring together state of the art research in the area.
Recommended topics include but are not limited to the following:
- user inclusion in SDMs
- evaluation matrix design to support SDMs
- cost issues associated with integrating usability in SDMs
- case studies of including usability in SDMs
- ethnographic studies
- guidelines for including usability in SDMs
- usability and SDMs - does company size matter?
- usability and SDMs - context of use
- impact of iterative project management on SDMs
- two cultures, one of usability and one of SDMs?
- Agile methods and usability
- Industry practices
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before May 31,
2008, papers for this special theme issue on Usability and Software
Development Methodologies in Scandinavia. All submissions must be
original and not be under review by another publication. Authors of
accepted papers will be notified by August 15, 2008 about the acceptance
status and sent paper organizational guidelines. Full papers are
expected to be submitted by October 15 2008. All submitted papers will
