2.2. Bidding and winning: the secrets of successful learning technology
project bids (due to popular demand). Thursday, 29 May 2008. National
College for School Leadership (NCSL), Nottingham. Presenters: Jeff
Haywood, Vice Principal Knowledge Management, Chief Information Officer
& Librarian at University of Edinburgh; Seb Schmoller, Chief Executive
of ALT; and Mark Stiles, Head of Learning Development and Innovation at
Staffordshire University. Project bids are time-consuming and should not
be undertaken lightly; this workshop will give tips on how to avoid
wasted effort and dashed hopes. Three experienced learning technology
project managers, who have run projects with funds from the JISC and
other sources, and who have judged bids written by others, will share
their perspectives on writing convincing bids for funds.

2.3. Second Life in real life: education beyond the hype (due to popular
demand). Thursday 23 October 2008, National College for School
Leadership (NCSL), Nottingham, led by Dr Steven Warburton, King's
College, London. The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants
to immersive 3D environments from a practical perspective and to
stimulate critical inquiry into the possibilities that massive
multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) offer learning and teaching
practice.

3.1. ALT Sponsoring Member BTL converts 13 National Qualification ESOL
units into interactive assessments. BTL has completed an 18 month
project to convert 13 National Qualification English for Speakers of
Other Languages (ESOL) units into e-Enabled and interactive formats for
the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). The 13 ESOL units will be
created as a SCORM package and also made available as CD ROMs. See

3.2. European Commission funded project will use BTL Assessment tools.
BTL will be the technology partner in the Workplace Literacy, Language
and Numeracy Evaluation Toolkit Project (WoLLNET). The project will be
funded by the European Commission's Leonardo da Vinci sub-programme, the
London Development Agency, and the Learning and Skills Council. See

3.3. ALT Sponsoring Member Desire2Learn has launched "Desire2Learn Web
Services", a web service interface to extend the functionality of the

3.4. The Beta version of the Informing Science Institute's open source
Learning Objects Repository (ISI OSLOR) is now available. ISI OSLOR is
the newest Open Source LOR created by a team of 5 individuals. The
source code will be available to download in June 2008 as a model to
use, expand, adapt, modify, and/or enhance the LO repository. To

3.5. ALT member the eLearning Network announces the event Building
Learning Communities. The event will focus on the potential for
collaborative learning to provide learners with ongoing support,
inspiration and shared expertise. Find out how organisations are
enriching their learning interventions through the use of collaborative
software, from VLEs and web conferencing through to the latest web 2.0

3.6. Launch of JISC/Times Higher award for outstanding ICT initiative.
The award, for which all higher education institutions, teams or
departments in the UK are eligible, is now open for entries until 12
June 2008. The award will be presented at an event on the 23rd October.

3.7. ALT Sponsoring Member JISC announces a new emphasis for key JISC
activities. JISC’s Development Group – the team that directs and manages
programmes across a wide range of key JISC activities, such as
