The department of Pediatrics – group of Pediatric Oncology/Hematology of
the Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam, has an open position for a
Biostatistician/Bioinformatician
With a PhD degree
THE DEPARTMENT – In the Pediatric Oncology/Hematology Department of the
Erasmus MC-Sophia Children’s Hospital, headed by Prof. Rob Pieters, the
research program on “Biological determinants of leukemogenesis and clinical
outcome and development of targeted therapies in childhood cancer” is
central. The research, mostly executed in the research laboratory led by
Dr. Monique L. den Boer, is directed towards (epi)genetic aberrations and
the molecular biology of cancer cells, aiming at improving treatment of
children with cancer. This work forms a bridge between research and clinic
and generates publications in important journals in oncology, as well as
intensive collaborations with other international research laboratories.
The group currently has one part-time biostatistician.
FUNCTION DESCRIPTION – Within this research programme we have a position
for a biostatistician/ bioinformatician, who will be responsible for the
data analysis related to the use of –omics data in the search for genes
and proteins that can be used to improve the diagnosis and treatment of
pediatric leukemia and solid tumors. Specific types of data collected are
high-throughput DNA, RNA and protein profiles from several patient groups.
The research will involve not only analyzing these data types individually,
but also searching for associated patterns between them. The person
appointed will also be involved in a new project to study the behaviour of
biological pathways using DNA, microRNA and RNA data.
DESIRED PROFILE – PhD in Statistics with work experience in applications to
Biology, or PhD in Biology/related subject with strong statistical content.
Enthousiastic, precise person able to work independently and as part of a
group. Ability to present results clearly orally as well as in writing to
non-statisticians is essential. Ability to work in various projects
efficient and simultaneously. Programming experience in statistical
environments is essential, experience with S-Plus/R highly desirable. Good
knowledge of English is essential, Dutch knowledge not essential. Previous
experience of complex data analysis may be an advantage.
WORK CONDITIONS – Salary depending upon qualification, skills and
experience. The appointment is for a full-time position with duration of 2
years, with extension possible depending on progress.
