What was now suddenly yesterday (title)
Luminescence not a chore
Kate Smith* over the
Cave’s choral, backlit, nightly mountain
Afternoon early television
Age un-battens grandmother, childhood
Drawn curtains against the sunset
Poetry’s launch seals
Immortality into small stanzas
Between walls shaken syllables
Calibrate the swell of blue dissonance
No matter what one bears
An assured resemblance perpetual
What is in the breath sharpens
Opens by slim degrees
What lies dormant
This night in which
Dreams mock the limits of the living
Once amber, now gold.

*For those - many no doubt - unfamiliar with 50's American television, Kate Smith was a well-known singer who finished the afternoon David Griffin (?) show with her keynote song, "The moon comes up over the mountain..." (or some such). The stage was backlit with the mountain and the moon. Out here in California - outside my grandmother's apartment - the day was still sunny, and it always seemed wierd to 11 year old me!
