Dear Michael,
I am not sure but, as the Nore was one of the naval bases in the south-east, perhaps it was customary to fire a gun to mark, perhaps, sunset and so the time to lower the flag.

Subject: [LOCAL-HISTORY] The Nore Gun
A deposition from the time of the Swing Riots in Essex includes a reference to the 8 o'clock gun at the Nore being fired. Can anyone shed any light on the use of guns to indicate the time of day, please?
