Session Description: This panel will offer critical commentaries on "Urban
Outcasts", the latest book by Loic Wacquant, a renowned urban sociologist
who has made several landmark contributions to, inter alia, the comparative
study of urban marginality in advanced capitalist nations. The book is
based on years of ethnographic, survey and historical research, and
compares the black ghetto of Chicago (south side) with the
deindustrializing banlieue of Paris, challenging the policy-led spectre of
transatlantic convergence by arguing that urban marginality is not the same
in these two contexts. After listening to the critical commentaries,
Wacquant will respond.
