an interesting article on the history of Tibet....chinese scholars on the
listserv have frequently argued that Tibet has been historically part of
Tibet....e.g. see the following quote from Yannan below:
"Tibet had been a part of China since middle 13th century. Prior to that, Tibet
was the ally of the Chinese Tang dynasty. In the year 1653 the fifth Dalai Lama
was officiated by the central government, and then the fifth Panchen Erdeni was
also officiated in 1713." (March 30)
it is possible that the version of history taught in China is overtly simplistic
and irons out the unpleasant wrinkles....

"For centuries, history - its management and manipulation - has been the compass
to create the necessary ideological paradigm to rule China. It's possible that
the fascination with Marxism at the beginning of the last century was due to its
historical materialism, which resonated with key aspects of the Chinese cultural
character: a passion for history and a very practical nature. The two elements,
history and practice, seemed to have gone hand-in-hand for centuries."
