Hydrocarbons are List 1 are they not? In which case there is no
"quality standard" that is applicable
In any case the cumulative effect of having numerous hydrocarbon species
in different bands means specifying limits for a particular fraction
without considering the cumulative (total TPH) impact is not likely to
go down with the EA well (not that they can offer you an alternative
mind you).
Best off consulting the document "DEFRA/EA, 2008; useful guidance that
we have not got round to publishing yet, or cant make our minds up
about" a draft version was issued on the 1/04/08 I believe, some
highlights include:
TPH in controlled waters; screening value what screening value
Benzo[a]pyrene; ignoring the problem as a viable solution
Significant harm; is there a legal definition
Excess cancer risk estimates; 10E-4.5 as a compromise
Statistics; does using invalid methodologies really matter
PAH; A cost benefit analysis of the determination of the whole of the UK

Subject: Water Quality Standards
All,
Is anybody aware of any water quality standards preferably EQS
comparable which can be used for speciated aliphatic and aromatic
hydrocarbons. For the site I have comparison to UKDWS is not at all
appropriate.
I have seen a report where some were used (i.e. 1.65 mg/L for aliphatic
C16-21) but the reference was not given so I don't know where the values
were sourced from.
Any help would be invaluable.
Thanks
Lawrence
