This sounds wonderful; wish I could be there. In case anyone is
interested, a close-to-final version of my paper, "Privacy, Visibility,
Transparency, and Exposure" is available at
http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1012068. It's
oriented toward the US legal system but I would be interested in
people's thoughts on the central argument about the roles that
"transparency" and "exposure" play in surveillance. I'm in the process
of working the argument into a book chapter, so any comments will be
most useful.

Thanks, Julie

Subject: ESRC Seminar, April 1st: Exposure - Subjectivity - Experience

Dear all,

=20

Surveillance Studies Network is holding the first of 6 seminars in the
ESRC funded series 'The Everyday life of Surveillance' on the 1st April
at ICOS, University of Sheffield.

=20

The seminar explores the experience of surveillance and is entitled
'Exposure - Subjectivity - Experience'. Surveillance exposes the
subject. Its movements, activities, personalities and expressions are
momentarily captured yet durably embedded in the surveillance
assemblage. The nature of exposure varies according to what information
is captured and why, and the extent to which the subject complies with,
resists, ignores or is ambivalent towards it. The experience of
surveillance has currently received little attention from surveillance
theorists, yet surveillance has profound consequences for the
individual. Privacy, trust, liberty, empowerment, mobility, economic,
social, physical and corporeal well-being, among other things, are
profoundly affected by surveillance practices. Developments in new
media, consumer surveillance, biometrics, workplace surveillance and
ubiquitous computing indicate that surveillance increasingly focuses on
the individual in its cognitive, emotional and psychoanalytic
complexity. The embodied individual is now a contested site under
surveillance. =20

=20

The seminar aims:

- to illuminate the complexities of 'being under surveillance'
- from performance to punishment and all the different places in between

- to explore the kind of subjectivities created under/by/with
surveillance, and whether it matters if anybody is watching

- to explore the question of volition, intentionality, power,
empowerment and powerlessness in relation to surveillance

- to identify and develop any concepts which might be used by
people researching the experience of surveillance

- to examine how this fits with existing, more macro or
institutional conceptions of surveillance

=20

The seminar features four speakers whose work has advanced theoretical
and empirical understandings of the surveillance experience.

=20

John McGrath, The Contact Theatre, Manchester

Hille Koskela, The Academy of Finland

Mike Nellis, The University of Strathclyde

Gareth Palmer, The University of Salford

=20

We have 10 places available. If you are interested in attending, please
reply to me off list by Friday 7th March.

Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

We look forward to hearing from you.=20

Many thanks

Kirstie
