Senior research assistant, School of Social Sciences
This post arises from a recent award by the Northern Rock Foundation to a
consortium comprising the University, the National Council for Voluntary
Organisations (NCVO) and Guidestar UK to conduct the quantitative elements
of the Foundation’s Third Sector Trends study. This is a large-scale
investigation of the state of the voluntary and community sector in NE
England and Cumbria. This project will examine variations in the
distribution, financing, staffing and activities of voluntary and community
organisations, and will investigate relationships between these
distributions and local socio-economic conditions.
You will be an enthusiastic researcher with good quantitative skills derived
from a degree in a relevant subject (e.g. economics, geography, politics,
sociology, statistics). You will play an active role in all aspects of the
project. Your main tasks will involve: reviewing existing literature on this
topic; data preparation and linkage; design of surveys where required; data
analysis, specifically using SPSS; and assisting in the general management
of the project, in drafting of papers, and presenting results at
conferences. You will possess the ability to work independently and as part
of a team, have excellent analytical skills and the ability to link
quantitative analyses to broader academic and policy debates.
This post will be available on a fixed term basis of 18 months, starting
salary £25134, and will be based in the School of Social Sciences at the
University of Southampton; some travel to NE England and Cumbria will be
required. The postholder will be responsible to the Principal Investigator,
Professor John Mohan.
