If memory serves there were at least three Cornish metal mines employing
ponies/horses underground: Levant (278 level), East Pool and (I think)
Polhiggy in the Wendron area. I believe the last two employed ponies
underground after the Great War as a consequence of the labour shortage.
Whether they hauled to grass I don't know - sorry to be so vague.

Subject: Horse levels in Cornwall
Hi All
During some recent research on Cornish iron mines I have come across two
mines where horse/ponies were used to haul ore out to surface from adits or
levels, namely Restormel Royal and Mount mines. Has anybody come across any
further mines in Cornwall where this was done.
Cheers
Tony Brooks
