AVPhD April Fools
Supervisors and Examiners Forum
1st April 2008, The Clore Management Centre, Birkbeck College, London
Since the big recruitment drive for practise-led PhDs just over 5
years ago, a critical
mass of AVPhD vivas are taking place and with them the first successes
and failures.
AVPhD April Fools is a day of networking for all potential and
experienced supervisors and examiners of audio-visual practice-led
doctorates. We shall reflect upon the critical institutional and
formal barriers that often limit successful research. In the final
plenary we aim to identify the main areas that need attention for
enabling high quality AVPhDs.
Rules and regulations – interpretation and application - how do
different universities compare? What are good models of
upgrades/transfers and vivas?
Supervisors and examiners – Who is suitable and how do you find them?
What questions do you need to ask?
Funding – What are the financial barriers to the creation and
exhibition of the practise? What can be expected of departments and of
funding bodies? What advice
should supervisors be given?
