NHS Northwest Updates
Our NHS Our Future Update
[A reminder of last week’s ONOF update – a further update will be available
in the next edition of Interaction]
The eight clinical pathway groups submitted the final drafts of their
reports to the SHA on Friday 22nd February. This has taken huge amounts of
hard work, commitment and enthusiasm, so a big thank you is due to everyone
involved, particularly as it has all been achieved on top of existing work
demands. The reports will now be summarised into an overall SHA report, with
the first draft due on 14th March. The SHA report will outline the key
themes and recommendations of the reports, and will be circulated widely to
obtain views on the recommendations and to invite suggestions on the most
effective ways for us to take these changes forward, where appropriate.
On 28th February, the clinical pathway group chairs and SHA facilitators are
meeting Lord Darzi and the NHS Review team in London, to learn more about
the national perspective of the NHS Review and to get an update on what is
happening in other SHAs around the country.
Birthday Breakfasts [Gateway House]
A reminder that our birthday breakfasts are still ongoing.
The date for the next birthday breakfast is April 17th 2008 and will be with
Sir David Henshaw in his office from 9am – 9:45am. Breakfast will be fruit,
pastries, tea, coffee and orange juice. So if you have a birthday in April,
you are invited to join Sir David for breakfast on this day.
We need to know the numbers of staff attending so that we can order
catering. Please can you reply to Faye Kirkley on ext 7115 or email
[log in to unmask] if you would like to attend.
Corporate News
New NHS North West 2007/08 Directories Now Available [Gateway House]
The New NHS North West 2007/08 Directories are now available. If you would
like a copy, please see Ann Richardson in the Comms Office (who sits just
inside the door!) or email her at [log in to unmask] If you
are based outside Gateway House, please call the Department of Health order
line on 08701 555 455 and order your (free!) copies.
Staff Attendance Records – March 2008
If you are an employee of the NHS North West and paid via Central Manchester
& Manchester Children’s NHS Trust payroll please complete your attendance
record sheet for MARCH and ensure that it is received in the HR Office by
Tuesday 1st April (copy attached). For those employees who will be on annual
leave on this date, please ensure you send your signed attendance sheet
before you take your leave.
The record sheet should be signed by you and your line manager and any
sickness notes or special leave applications should be attached. A copy of
the attendance sheet for March is now available at Link
It would be very helpful if Executive Assistants could send out a reminder
to staff in their own directorate. If you have colleagues in your team who
are out on secondment, on maternity leave or long term sickness a record
sheet still needs to be completed. Please will you forward this email or
complete on their behalf.
Please do not assume your attendance for the end of March, as staff have to
the 1st of April to return their records
Mandatory Training for All Staff
As you will be aware, web based training is now available via the Virtual
Learning Environment (VLE) for all staff via the VLE link, which is
www.nwvle.nhs.uk and should be copied and pasted into your browser.
The NW SHA takes the equality, diversity and the health and safety of its
staff seriously, and it is therefore extremely important that all employees
have a basic level of training across these areas. We are therefore asking
that over the next few months managers support their staff in completing
these mandatory modules on VLE. Managers will need to ensure that staff are
given sufficient time to complete this training, which will help the SHA
meet its statutory requirements in relation to health and safety training.
Therefore we require all staff to complete the following by 30th April 2008:
a.. Fire Safety Awareness (approximately 1.5 – 2 hours to complete)
b.. Health & Safety Awareness (approximately 1.5 hours to complete)
c.. Disability Awareness (approximately 1 - 1.5 hours to complete)
The following should then be completed by 30th June 2008:
a.. Manual Handling (approximately 1.5 – 2 hours to complete)
b.. Display Screen Equipment (approximately 20 – 40 minutes to complete)
c.. Diversity – Respect for People (approximately 2.5 – 3 hours to
complete)
Each course can also be completed on a modular basis (with each module
taking 20 – 30 minutes) as an alternative to completing each one in one
session. These courses have been assessed as relevant and fit for purpose
for NHS use. It is recognised that web based training does not necessarily
replace the need for other types of formal training, but the flexibility of
web based training will help to ensure staff are all bought up to the same
level of competency.
For any logging in/password or technical problems please log these with the
helpdesk at: [log in to unmask]
Further VLE Awareness Sessions
As you will have seen two VLE awareness sessions have been set up for 25th
March running from 11:00 – 12:00, and 13:00 – 14:00 in Gateway House
(Meeting Room 1). There are still places available so please book these with
Tim Pearson by email – [log in to unmask] As we anticipate that
these sessions will be popular a further two sessions at Gateway House have
been arranged for 16th April at 11:00 – 12:00 and 13:00 – 14:00 (Meeting
Room 1), again please contact Tim if you wish to attend one of these
sessions indicating your preference. Our understanding is that the Mersey
Deanery have already received training, however where sufficient interest is
expressed an awareness session will be arranged at the Mersey Deanery.
Other courses which are also available to staff on VLE include:
a.. Introduction to Information Governance
b.. KSF
c.. Introduction to Stress Management
d.. Workforce Planning
e.. The 18 weeks Programme
f.. Conflict Resolution
g..
The HR team would like to thank you in anticipation of your co-operation.

‘Improving working lives’ within NHS Northwest
Our staff have the right to work in a supportive, safe and friendly
environment. Therefore, NHS North West have initiated a project based on
‘Improving Working Lives’, which will be linked in with the BUILD Together
World Class organisation initiative.
Improving Working Lives (IWL) asked employers to look at various areas
within the workplace to ensure they were up to a required standard. These
headings included:
· HR management/strategy
· Equality and diversity
· Staff involvement and communication
· Flexible working/support for carers
· Healthy working
· Training and development
NHS North West has set up an IWL/BUILD Together Group, with representatives
from across NHS North West, which will look at these headings and see where
we might need to improve, to ensure that we are working to the highest
standards possible.
The Group welcomes feedback from all staff within NHS North West. If you
have any comments or questions about IWL/BUILD Together or your working life
within NHS North West, then please speak to your directorate representative
on the IWL Group, or alternatively contact Eleanor Miley on

Forthcoming staff briefing sessions
Our NHS, Our Future
In July 2007 Lord Darzi announced a clinically-led review of the NHS. The
aim of the Review was to build on the progress made in delivering the vision
set out in the NHS plan, and to identify the way forward for a 21st Century
NHS which is clinically-driven, patient-centred and responsive to local
communities.
As part of the review, eight Clinical Pathway Groups were set up with the
task of reviewing services in their areas, and reporting back to the SHA on
how services could be improved. In addition, lots of engagement activity has
been underway since September, involving staff, the public and our
stakeholders to find out what they think of the NHS and how they believe
that services could be improved.
The Clinical Pathway Groups have now completed their reviews, and these will
be incorporated into a draft SHA report which will then be discussed with
colleagues in PCTs, acute trusts, and other stakeholder organisations across
the North West to agree how we can work together to make sure improvements
are implemented where appropriate.
The briefing session will give feedback on progress to date, the main
recommendations of the Clinical Pathway Groups, and next steps for the NHS
Review.
If you would like to book a place on this session, please email Ann
Richardson at [log in to unmask]
The National Programme for IT and the SHA’s Chief Information and Knowledge
Management Team (CIKO)
Have you read in the papers about that NHS national computer system that’s
costing billions and billions of pounds and is said to be a big disaster?
The one that’s been linked by the media to all that patient data loss and
riddled with scandalous delays and is basically reported to be a big waste
of money because it doesn’t actually work… you know the one we mean?
If that’s what you think about the NHS’s national programme for IT we’d
really like the opportunity to set the record straight, bring you up to
speed on what it’s all about and how it’s already helping patients and NHS
staff and introduce you to the wonderful world of the CIKO team. CIKO – it
stands for the Chief Information and Knowledge Office and we’re the team
helping NHS organisations to make the programme for IT happen in the North
West.
We’d really like to see you at our ‘intro to the team’ awareness session in
the Boardroom at Gateway House on 27th March from 1pm to 2pm. It’s a great
opportunity to get away from your desk for an hour and you’ll get to find
out more about how technology is helping to transform the NHS.
If you would like to book a place on this session, please email Ann
Richardson at [log in to unmask]
The Our Life Programme
A year ago this month the SHA Board signed off the funding for the Living
Better Living Longer Caring More Programme, one of three major projects the
SHA is taking forward. But what has happened since then? Why has the name
changed? Who works on the programme and where is it heading?
Come along to the Boardroom at Gateway House on 15th April from
12:30pm-1:30pm to find out answers to these questions and learn about our
ambitions for the programme and for the health and well-being of everyone in
the North West!
An additional date for this session has now been arranged for:
1st May 2008, 12:30pm – 1:30pm in the Boardroom [Gateway House]
If you would like to book a place on the above session, please email Ann
Richardson at [log in to unmask]
Future Staff Briefing Sessions
We are looking for suggestions for themes for future staff briefing
sessions. If you would like to lead a session or have a suggestion, please
contact [log in to unmask]
We would also like to hear your views about changing the timing of the
sessions, so that they do not fall at lunchtime. Please let us have your
thoughts on this – [log in to unmask]
