Hi Derek
I can't speak on behalf of UK universities, but I would challenge Arthur Sale's claim that most Australian university libraries use LC. In my experience, this is not the case at all.
A quick scan of six major universities in Melbourne indicates that ALL use Dewey. Of eleven universities outside Victoria (including Arthur Sale's own institution), only four use LC. Perhaps this is a regional issue, but it certainly doesn't look from this end as though LC use is as widespread as we're led to believe.
Regards
Rebecca

Subject: Challenging assertions
As a regular lurker here I just want to challenge the implication of
John Smith's assertion. Although it may be literally true that "most"
use LC, ie- greater than 50% - I know a very significant minority,
including some Russell group do not; DC or UDC was also considered
better for technological libraries and we all live with decisions
made typically fifty years ago as no one is going to reclassify.
In the absence of hard data an educated guess would be that several
dozen UK universities out of about 120 are NOT using LCC.
