List members will be saddened to learn of the death of Francesca Romana
Serra Ridgway in Colchester, on 7 March last; with great fortitude, she
had suffered for a number of months from an incurable illness. A quiet
funeral was held on 18 March.
A well-known Etruscologist, Francesca's publications include a
four-volume excavation report on the Fondo Scataglini cemetery of the
Hellenistic period at Tarquinia. Together with her husband, David
Ridgway, she worked hard to make Italian archaeological scholarship
better known in the English-speaking world, with publications such as
their 1979 (eds) Italy before the Romans: the Iron Age, Orientalizing
and Etruscan periods, and their numerous book reviews in Classical
Review, Journal of Roman Archaeology and other journals.
